Faculty:
The faculty members of the Bharatnatyalaya are trained in traditional learning under the well known gurus late Guru Govindraj Pillai, late Guru Mahalingam Pillai, late Guru Satheeshkumar Pillai and several others. They also hold diplomas from Bruhat Gujarat Sangat Samiti and the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda.
Late Guru Satishkumar Pillai the founder of the Shivkrupa Bharatnatyalaya had his early learning of dance under the Guru-Shishya parampara from his own senior family members, namely, Late Govindraj Pillai and Late Mahalingam Pillai and similarly many others in the family. He did a diploma in dance from M. S. University and also passed Visharad from Bruhat Gujarat Sangeet Samiti. At the early stage of his carier he worked as a dance teacher in Arya Kanya Vidyalaya for nearly 25 years an institution run by Pritibha Pandit, besides conducting classes in Bharuch and Nadiad. He also spent a lot of time in initiating dance classes in lesser known villages of Gujarat. It may be said that he had played a key role in popularizing Bharathnatyam style in Gujarat. After his demise the institute is run by his son and daughter-in-law Guru Sri Shivkumar Pillai and Guru Smt Deepa Pillai.
Shri Shivkumar Pillai: Shri Shivkumar Pillai is a talented, traditional Bharatnatyam exponent from Tanjavur Gharana. He was trained by his father Late Guru Shri Satheeshkumar Pillai. He has completed Alankar (M.A.)in Bharatnatyam and Tabala from Bruhat Gujarat Sangeet Samiti. In addition to this he also holds a diploma in Tabala from the Faculty of Performing Arts, the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. He has won a gold medal from Bruhat Gujarat Sangeet Samiti. Over the years he has successfully trained several students for Arangetram and various degree examinations. In recognition of his excellence he has been invited to judge events such as Zonal Balshree Award and Youth Festivals in the Maharaja Sayajiro University of Baroda. He has widely travelled abroad to conduct dance performances. Currently he is teaching at various centres in and around Baroda.
Smt. Deepa Shivkumar: Smt. Deepa Shivkumar is the great granddaughter of Smt. Gauri Amma, the Bharatnatyam dancer at the court of H.H. Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad of Baroda. She is a trained Bharatnatyam dancer and holds a postgraduate degree in Performing Arts. She was initiated to dance by her father-in-law late Shri Satheeshkumar Pillai and later trained under Shri Shivkumar Pillai. She had always been a great support to Shri Shivkumar Pillai in training students and also managing various events.
